SteelVine Reference Board
2-drive SATA to USB or eSATA
The PB472304-005 reference board can drop into a variety
of standard storage
enclosures to effortlessly transform them into an advanced
eSATA/USB RAID external
storage device. It implements 100% hardware RAID across
two SATA hard disk drives
with zero software required, and it connects to the host
computer through either high
speed eSATA or USB 2.0.
The PB472304-005 uses Silicon Image's SiI4723
SteelVine storage processor to "virtualize" the
two SATA disk drives, enabling RAID across the
drives, and making them look like a single SATA
drive to the host controller, allowing even nonport
multiplier aware controllers to take advantage
of the SiI4723 storage processor’s
capabilities. The hardware RAID is controlled
via a simple rotary switch on the back panel.
Manufacturers can also remove the rotary
switch and set the RAID mode via onboard
jumpers or using an optional GUI management
tool. The external Serial ATA link on the
PB472304-005 brings the advantages of Serial
ATA - high speed, low cost and reliable data
transmission - to a user-friendly and robust
external connector, while USB 2.0 ensures compatibility
with virtually every computer currently
in the market.
The PB472304-005 reference board allows manufacturers
to get to market quickly with a precertified
design built on Silicon Image's proven
SteelVine Controllers. Complete mechanical and
electrical design files, gerber files, BOM's,
schematics, user documentation, drivers, the
SteelVine Storage Manager, and the XML API
with software are avaliable upon request.
Introducing our latest Port Multiplier feature SiI-4726 a hardware RAID bridge control up to FIVE SATA drives - RAID_PM
Flexible, Fast and Intelligent - That is what our SATA II Port Multiplier (SiI4726 base) offering.
To connect multiple SATA drives to a Single SATA port, and creating RAID array without resource to host CPU now is a reality, thank to the proven SteelVine Storage Processor Architecture from Silicon Image. Our RAID_PM is base on SiI 4726 chip set, which provides a new level of affordable storage for professional users. The RAID_PM provides 3Gb/s SATA performance over the single host SATA link as well as the five device SATA links, and can be configured for internal or external use
Until now, transfer rates of 3Gb/s and hardware RAID features, were only available to enterprise class applications. RAID PM allows OEMs and system integrator to offer high-end features for price-sensitive professional market applications. Users of the RAID PM can eliminate CPU loading by using the embedded RISC storage processor, which was developed by Silicon Image, and tuned for the needs of storage applications. This storage processor completely frees up the main CPU and provides the enhanced RAID modes
RAID PM allows up to five SATA drives can be configured reliable data mirroring, data performance striping, or just plain capacity expansion using the friendly GUI provided, RAID PM RAID modes are:
Mirroring (RAID 1) allows SATA Hard drives to automatically copy primary hard drive without any CPU loading (typical 1% CPU resource). The our RAID PM provides automatic rebuild on SATA Hard drives replacement and auto-failover, to eliminate any workflow interruptions.
Stripping (RAID 0) allows the SATA Hard drives to performance stripe, to provide maximum throughput to the direct attached PC/Server.
Spanning allows to make any SATA Hard drives (same or different sizes) appear as one large drive to the host, for extra capacity (also called concatenation).
JBOD or Port Multiplier this allows the SATA Hard drives attached PC/Server to see each drive as just a bunch of drives.
Striping and Mirroring (RAID 10) allows the device to improve data availability beyond RAID 5 or RAID 6 with large SATA drives, due to rebuild vulnerability.
Spanning and Mirroring allows for large capacity with protection. The RAID PM works with any Serial ATA compliant host port, although such as cascade feature (more than 5 drives) JBOD access require a port multiplier aware host controller such as SiI 3124-2 or SiI 3132
