 Fan Failure of Small USB and FIrewire Enclosures made in China and Taiwan Over the years we have sold tens of thousands external enclosures with small 20mm/30mm and 40mm high-output cooling fans, we have also repaired and warranted a few of these small cooling fan. We have concluded based on a few customer reports of noisy fans that environmental factors beyond our control are the leading cause of fan failure hard drive failure and power supply failure. Please be aware that environments with excessive dust pet dandier, limited air conditioning, carpet fibers will result in a lot shorter life span of any small diameter cooling fan. It has come to our attention that a few bad reviews by people like Tony Spencer and others have been giving us some bad press. As an example, we have just received three more enclosures back from a US Government Agency and all three have bad non working fans, after reviewing the items it seems that Pet Hair Carpet fibers and excessive dust is the reason for failure of each of these fans. We have emailed customer images of these seized fans and customer did admit to storing items on a carpeted floor with limited Air Conditioning. We will cover one instance of such misuses under warranty and will replace failed fans at no cost to customers that have this problem within the first year of enclosure ownership. We are now aware of these factors and will try to do more testing in tougher environments that may cause fan failure. In our extensive Testing within an Air Conditioned environment and within operating temperature range specified for each product, we have not been able to reproduce fan failure of this magnitude other than occasional MFG. defect well within our 0.5% range. For Those who post inaccurate or false statements online: It has come to our attention that a non customer (possible competitor) is posting a video online about bad enclosure fans on a few year old enclosure. In his video he displays our product making excessive cooling fan noise, since there is no close up view we can only assume that fans have become extremely filthy as in other cases that we have seen returned to us.
