1. Introduction
1-1. Overview
Have you ever thought about encrypting entire disk content bit-by-bit with realtime
operation? Are you afraid of losing system performance with encryption
enabled? Are you tired of system compatibility issues accompanied with those
software encryption products?
Welcome to the world of real-time encryption and decryption: TP-3218 Secure
PCI Adaptor – the Ultimate guard for your privacy and confidentiality. TP-3218
Secure PCI Adaptor is the device based real-time encryption/decryption processor
that encrypts the entire disk content bit-by-bit including boot sector and operating
system without performance degradation.
TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor has equipped with NIST (National Institute of
Standards and Technology) certified DES/TDES 40/64/128/192-bit real-time
encryption & decryption engine, and offers the military grade protection for your
sensitive data. Unlike that of software, PC card and Smart card solutions, The
product provides silicon based real-time engine, capable of maneuvering 712Mbit
per second throughput without taking extra CPU time and system resources.
Every disk write (encryption) and disk read (decryption) operation is completely
transparent to users. Furthermore, TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor works with ALL
operating systems and does not require any device drivers.
TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is engineered to be 100% compatible with all the
latest motherboards and Ultra ATA (Ultra DMA) devices. It is also backward
compatible with PIO, DMA and FastATA drives. For best performance, do NOT
attempt to connect the non IDE devices to the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor if you
would plan to have the most advanced real-time encryption/decryption function
enabled.

2. Read This Before You Configure the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor
You are urged to carefully read through the following sessions prior to your installation.
2-1. This unique product is specifically engineered to encrypt/decrypt the entire disk
drive bit-by-bit real-time including boot sector and operating system. It does not
decrease your overall system performance; nor does it need special device driver
support, making it completely independent from all operating systems. It is also
designed to be 100% compatible with all IDE compliant disk drives. However, it is
NOT currently engineered to encrypt/decrypt the optical storage devices
such as CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM. Instead, use the
product exclusively for only one hard disk drive connection, be it a Master or a
Slave configuration on either of the available channels.
2-2. Especially noted is that your product comes with a pair of external & portable key
used for authentication and operation of encryption/decryption. Without the
presence of the enclosed portable key, your computer will not be able to
boot (if you choose to configure the intended disk drive as the Primary Master);
or the data on the disk drive will not be seen (if you choose to configure the
intended disk drive as the Slave). As the “Secret Key” of the DES real-time engine
is stored in the Portable KEY, it’s extremely important that you always maintain
one Portable KEY accessible while shelf the other to a safe repository. The
decryption process relies solely on the “Secret Key” inside the Portable KEY.
Losing both Portable KEY will make your daily computing life so miserable as the
recovery of encrypted data is extremely hard without the right “Secret Key.”
Which stores the “Secret Key” value required for the functional DES & TDES. The
“Secret Key” is a random combination of digitized bit of “0” and “1” in a specified
length such as 40-bit, 64-bit, 128-bit or 192-bit.
It is the company policy that we destroy the random database after it is
written into the Portable KEY. There isn’t any duplication of the random
database.
2-3. The 1394 connector on the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is not a “real” 1394
standard connector. We adopt the connec tor as a special designed function key
connector. Any other 1394 connectors might cause the severe damage caused by
the wrong connector insertion.
3. Installation
3-1. Before installation
If there is any data inside the HDD on the first installation of TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor, always back up all existing files BEFORE you install the device. Our
company will not responsible for any damage or data loss because of such wrong
procedure.

3-3. Physical Installation
(1) Power off your computer
(2) Be sure you have configured your disk drive as either a Master or a Slave via
disk jumper setting. If you chose to use the intended disk drive as a slave
device, make sure you have set Slave jumper on the TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor. (Please refer to Appendix 1)
(3) Remove the iron cover from one of the available slots on the back of case
and get familiar with Main Circuit Board of TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor
As shown in figure above, there are two standard IDE connectors on the TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor. The right-hand side IDE connector should be
connected to either Primary or Secondary channel of the Motherboard while
the left-hand side IDE connector labeled as “To Hard Disk Drive” should be
connected directly to the intended single disk drive.
Remember do NOT attempt to connect more than one disk drive to the “To
Hard Disk Drive” connector. There are two colored LED lights (beside the key
insert: Red - Error and Green – Power) that display the current status of TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor after power on. Most importantly, the Security Key
must be properly inserted prior to powering up your computer. Your secure
disk drive will NOT be seen by the system without the presence of the
Security Key.
(4) Insert the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor in the available PCI slot on the
motherboard, and secure it with proper screws.
(5) Connect the intended hard disk with a custom made IDE cable with 2
connectors to IDE connector labeled as “To Hard Disk Drive” of the Secure
PCI Adaptor. Do NOT mix cables in a single system and only use custom
made IDE cables. Be sure to align pin 1 of the IDE cable to pin 1 on both the
disk drive and the main circuit board. Pin 1 on the disk drive is located next to
the power connector.
(6) The connector labeled as “To Mainboard” of Secure PCI Adaptor should be
connected to either the Primary or Secondary channel of the Motherboard via
a custom made IDE cable with 3 connectors.
(7) Properly insert the Portable KEY into the key insert on the panel of the TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor.
(8) Power up and experience the powerful features that TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor brings you.
(9) Perform Partition and Format. The command used to create partition and
format disk depends on operating system. FDISK and FORMAT for the disk
drive connected to the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor. (Please refer to
Appendix-2)
Appendix 1– Configuring Your Hard Disk Drive
You must configure your disk drive via mode setting jumper found on the back of the
drive prior to attaching it to the product. We suggest that you refer to the manual
provided by the hard disk manufacturers about how to set the jumpers on the disk drive.
The following table offers four possible selections for your determination. You can
ONLY choose one from the four available options.
Primary / Motherboard Secondary / Motherboard
Master / HDD
Yes, secure boot drive
{Default. Do NOT set any jumper
on TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor}
Yes, secure data drive
{Default. Do NOT set any jumper
on TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor}
Slave / HDD
Yes, secure data drive
{MUST jumper-on Slave on TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor}
Yes, secure data drive
{MUST jumper-on Slave on TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor}
Option 1
Primary Master – if you desire to use the intended disk drive as a secure boot
drive. Everything including boot sector and operating system will be encrypted
real-time. You MUST perform FDISK and FORMAT (please refer to Appendix 2 –
How to use FDISK and FORMAT) under this controller, no matter the intended
disk drive is a brand new one or not.
Option 2
Primary Slave – if you desire to use the intended disk drive as a secure data
storage drive. You MUST jumper-on the Slave of the controller. Everything on the
drive will be encrypted if you had performed FDISK and FORMAT. If FORMAT
was NOT performed for a used drive with residual data, such residual data will
not be encrypted after the activation of TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor Under this
scenario the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor still performs decryption on the clear
text, which will result in cipher text – an illegible form that maybe problematic to
you. Therefore, please perform FORMAT on a used drive whenever possible.
Option 3
Secondary Master – if you desire to use the intended disk drive as a secure data
storage drive. Again, you MUST perform FDISK and FORMAT for a new drive
under this controller. You may perform FORMAT solely for a used drive to avoid
potential problem as described above.
Option 4
Secondary Slave – if you desire to use the intended disk drive as a secure data
storage drive. You MUST jumper-on the Slave of the controller. You MUST
perform FDISK and FORMAT for a new drive under this controller. You may
perform FORMAT solely for a used drive to avoid potential problem as described
in Option 2.
Appendix 2 – How to Use FDISK and FORMAT
FDISK – Partition
Under DOS prompt, type FDISK and press .

Maximum space available for partition is xxxxx Mbytes ( %)
Enter partition size in Mbytes or percent of disk space ( %)
To create the Primary DOS partition … … … … … … .[ ]
Select the fullest extent (enter 100%) or a percentage (for example: 50%).
FORMAT
An FAT16 format with LBA support can format up to 2GB per partition (512MB per
partition without proper BIOS support). An updated FAT32 format from Windows
95B, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 can format up to 8GB per partition. The latest
NTFS (NT file system) from Windows NT and Windows XP can format up to 8GB
per partition. The Motherboard onboard BIOS extended INT13 service capability
along with FAT32 and NTFS will allow you to partition and format drive over than
8.4GB as one single partition. The NTFS is backward compatible with FAT32 and
FAT16. A Windows NT/2000/XP Operating System supports drives formatted with
FAT32 and/or FAT16. However, Windows 95, 98 and Me Operating System do
NOT support drives formatted with NTFS. Therefore, it is extremely important that
you choose the right diskette containing the right “FDISK” and “FORMAT” programs
to partition and format your new disk.
To format your new drive, insert a bootable diskette containing programs of “FDISK”
and “FORMAT” into A: then power on the computer. Type “FORMAT ”
under DOS prompt then press . For example, to format the C: drive, under
DOS prompt, type “FORMAT C:” to start formatting. Type “FORMAT C:/S” to start
formatting with the system files copied.
Appendix 3 – Q&A
Q What is “ TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor”?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit)
engineered specifically to encrypt/decrypt the entire hard disk bit by bit including
boot sector and operating system in real-time performance using NIST (National
Institute of Standards and Technology) certified DES (Data Encryption Standard)
algorithm.
Q Encrypt the entire disk content in real-time operation? How?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is specifically engineered to handle high throughput
disk I/O transfer. It is totally transparent from all users and completely independent
from all operation systems. It does NOT change your regular computing behavior.
System performance with TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor engaged is unaffected. The
performance-optimized DES hardware core performs all encryption and decryption.
There is no software component, eliminating memory and interrupt overhead. TP-
3218 Secure PCI Adaptor offers 712Mbits/sec real-time performance to all IDE
compatible hard drives.
Q What can TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor do?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor, an IDE gateway, sits between the PCI south bridge
and the device on the IDE interface. It intercepts, interprets, translates, and relays
IDE commands & data to and from the disk drives, encrypting the data with DES
40/64-bit key strength. The entire disk bit by bit including boot sector, file system,
and operating system can be 100% encrypted using DES 40/64-bit key strength,
offering you the complete confidentiality and privacy.
Q What disk drives can TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor work with?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor can be operated with Ultra ATA (Ultra DMA)
33/66/100 compliant disk drives in real-time with throughput of 712Mbits/sec.
Q What operating system can TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor work with?
A The TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor requires no device drivers and is independent
from all operating systems. As long as the disk drive is Ultra ATA (Ultra DMA)
compliant, TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor can work with the system. Once
authenticated, its operation is completely transparent to the user.
Q Will I suffer from performance loss due to TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor?
A No. The TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor functions as a real-time device and offers
throughput of 712Bbits/sec or more. Your disk I/O performance will not suffer due to
the operational TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor. Instead, your confidentiality and
privacy will be well protected.
Q What does TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor compare with Smart Card and
PCMCIA?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is dramatically faster than PCMCIA or Smart Card
solutions, and encrypts the entire hard drive. There is no possibility of any secret
being left available on the hard drive, including password and “Secret Key.” Drive
locking and boot sector encryption solutions do not encrypt the data, which can be
read with simple equipment. In a TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor system, there is no
simple way to read the data without the right “Secret Key.”
Q Can I encrypt two hard disk drives via a single TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor?
A No. TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is designed to encrypt/decrypt only one disk drive.
Q What is “DES”?
A DES (Data Encryption Standard) was originally introduced by NSA (National
Security Agency) and IBM and has since become a Federal data encryption
standard as defined in FIPS 46-3 (Federal Information Processing Standard). Its
algorithms are completely public, and it has withstood the test of time. Over time,
new cryptographic attacks have been developed, to which DES has been
surprisingly resistant. Therefore, as an algorithm with a quarter century under its
belt, DES has earned its stripes. However, its 56-bit key length is no longer proof
against massive computer attack, and it can no longer be considered truly secure.
However, it remains adequate -- for a while, at least -- and is sufficient for most
business applications. DES works on 64-bit data segments with a 64-bit key of
which 8 bits provide parity, resulting in a 56-bit effective length. A variant on DES is
TDES, in which the plain text is processed three times with two or three different
DES security keys. As two keys are involved, the result is an encryption equivalent
to using a 112-bit key. As three keys are involved, the result is an encryption
equivalent to using a 168-bit key. In practice of a 128-bit TDES, the plain text is
encrypted with the first key, decrypted with the second key, and then encrypted
again with the first key.
Q What is 40-bit, 56-bit or 112-bit key effective length?
A The number of bits represents cipher strength, not considering the way bits are
generated. In general, larger size of key length represents stronger cipher, which
generally means eavesdropper must spend more time in finding a key (to decrypt)
within key space. For instance, 240 represents key space of 1,099,511,627,776
possible combinations. It looks like an impossible task for a human brain to conduct
such a search but it is definitely feasible for a microprocessor or a special design
ASIC to perform such a heavy-duty work. A US$10,000 investment in FPGA will be
able to recover a 40-bit key in 12 minutes. Further, a US$10,000,000 investment in
ASIC will be able to recover a 40-bit key in 0.05 second. A government agency that
can afford investing US$100,000,000 or more will be able to recover a 40-bit key in
a whapping 0.002 second! The 40-bit length cipher offers a barely minimum
protection for your confidentiality and privacy. However, a one bit length increases
will double the key space, say 241 represents key space of 2,199,023,255,552
possible combinations. The 2112 TDES cipher offers the maximum security
(5,192,296,858,534,827,628,530,496,329,220,096 possible combinations) that
could not be possibly broken in the next 15 to 20 years, considering the advance of
semiconductor design and manufacturing.
Q Will I expect 19-step log on procedures & complex GUI (Graphical User’s
Interface) like other systems require?
A No. TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor does NOT change user’s regular computing
behavior, neither does it equip with complex GUI. It does not require you to
memorize frequently seen cumbersome log on procedures. It is totally transparent
to all users. You only need to present your external & Portable KEY every time you
power up your system.
Q What is the external & Portable KEY?
A TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor comes with an external & Portable KEY that loads
TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor status and most importantly, the DES “Secret Key.”
The Portable KEY serves as an exclusive device for authentication from which the
KEY must present itself to activate TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor.
Q What happens if the external & Portable KEY got lost or stolen?
A If the external & Portable KEY got lost or stolen, you will NOT be able to boot from
the drive that TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor has controlled with. This is because
boot sector and operation systems are enc rypted with the DES “Secret Key” and
the original “Secret Key” must present itself to activate TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor. There is no possibility of any secret information being left available on the
hard drive, including passwords and “Secret Key.”
Q Can I remove the external & Portable KEY after the TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor is up and running?
A Yes. You can remove the external & Portable KEY only after TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor is up and running. However, the Portable KEY MUST present itself next
time you power up your system.
Q Do I lose my disk content if the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor was found of
malfunction?
A No. As long as you safely keep the original Portable KEY, a new replacement of
the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor will resume all functions.
Q Can I exchange the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor encrypted files using public
network?
A No. The DES core engine built inside the TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor is a
symmetric cipher, which is a “Secret Key” system and does NOT support the Public
Key Infrastructure (PKI). You will not be able to exchange TP-3218 Secure PCI
Adaptor encrypted files through public network.
Q Does TP-3218 Secure PCI Adaptor increase the original file size after
encryption?
A No. DES is a complicated mathematical algorithm that computes the original data
with 64-bit key length. The size of data after encryption remains the same.
